Reflection on Art Practice-based Research
My research, titled Exploring the Future of Ecofeminism through Cross-Species Co-Creation of Multimedia Art, aims to redene creative practices by embracing non-human agency and exploring the transformative potential of ecofeminist principles. Ecofeminism critiques dualistic patriarchal and anthropocentric ideologies, advocating for deep interconnectedness between humans, nature, and non-human entities (Plumwood, 2003; Shiva, 1993). Through multimedia art practices, my research examines how collaborative actions between humans and non-human agents challenge hierarchical frameworks.
Breastmilk
Ecological Justice of Industrial Animal Farming and Water Resources. ”Industrial animal farming is one of the significant contributors to global water resource consumption. Its high water usage and pollution are intricately linked to capitalist exploitation. For example, dairy farming requires approximately 1,000 liters of water to produce one liter of milk, while dairy cows are forced into high-frequency lactation, and their calves are quickly separated from their mothers due to industrial demands (Gruen, 2021, pp. 45-46). On the other hand, the chemical composition in breast milk; Ecofeminist theorist Lori Gruen's 'entangled empathy' theory views this exploitation as a manifestation of the dual oppression of nature and women's bodies under patriarchy and capitalism (Gruen, 2015). This theory calls for the integration of water resource concerns in ecological justice, especially in re-examining the intersection of gender and ecology within global agricultural systems.
Remote Rest
Remote Rest is a cross-temporal art experiment inspired by the artist's remote interactions with a cat from their hometown in China. The artist attempts to synchronize with the cat's natural rhythms through real-time data and technological connections, yet inevitably experiences a physical and psychological divide. This project explores new relationships between humans and animals, humans and technology, and humans and nature, contrasting the cat's "living in the moment" with the cultural anxiety of "rest shame" in modern life. The project aims to redefine the philosophical value of rest. Through this practice, the artist reflects on the tension between distant relationships and technological connection, imbuing remote interaction with philosophical and social significance and offering a poetic and profound expression of "slow living."
The Voice of Water
The commodification of water, the deprivation of community power, and the consequences of ecological inequality. Through the metaphorical and material nature of water, the project exposes its dual role as a carrier of power in the conflict between capital and community, while providing a platform for oppressed communities to voice their struggles.
